Bike Styles Good for eBike Conversion
Mountain Bikes // Kona Lana'i
Most mountain bikes make great eBikes due to their sturdy design. Most mountain bikes can be converted into daily commuters or dual purpose use. Here are some things to consider when choosing a mountain bike: Frame geometry, it is convenient if the battery can fit into the frame triangle and is very desirable for off-road use. Generally a mountain bike must be a 19” or bigger for a frame mount setup. The Kona Lan'i pictured above is a great example of an affordable MTB that at 19”can fit a 48V 15aH LifePO4 or a whopping 48V 20aH LiMn battery in its frame and still have room for the controller as well! This bike is available as of this printing at Al's bicycles in OKC,OK in 19” and 21” versions for $529. Disc brakes are another desirable trait. While V brakes and cantilever style brakes stop well, disc brakes leave options open for fenders and front racks. You will want to ensure that the frame dropouts are the standard 135mm if you plan on running a 7,8 or 9 speed rear end. If you have questions about a certain bike don't hesitate to contact us.
Hybrids // Trek 7.2 FX
Hybrids are the top contenders for commuter bikes. They are light enough for city driving and still able to adventure on the occasional trail. These bikes work well with any of the motor and power options we offer. The frames are usually large enough to mount your battery and the steel forks lend themselves to front drive hub motors. Of course they are just as happy with a rear mounted motor as well. A good commuter hybrid should have mounts for front and rear racks ready to accept panniers lending itself to carrying a ton of cargo. Trek and Raliegh both make great hybrids. One thing in particular this style of bike is great for is long distance riding. You can mount a large battery on the rear rack and another in the frame triangle for loads of distance. There are also trailers that you can pull with even more capacity. As with any bike simply contact us with any questions you may have.
Fixies // Trek District
Fixies are unique bikes that are old-school style “fixed” wheel designs that the pedals move with the wheel when it turns. Fortunately some Fixies like the Trek District allow for the wheel to be flipped over and it has a freewheel on the other side to allow coasting. These bikes are HUGELY popular with the urban crowd and students. They are ideal for a simple eBike conversion and are usually the lowest cost option due to their simple design. The District has MSRP of $659, however, they range from $99 at Walmart to thousands for some European models. A lot of people simply build one from an old steel framed 10 speed and trick them out! These bikes do well with the small 250W Bafang and Cute motors that we supply all the way to an HS/HT35. These are also good for front wheel drive bikes because most of them use steel front forks. The frames are usually large and readily accept either frame mount or rear rack mounted batteries. For just going to the store of getting around campus a simple 36V system with a slick 10ah water bottle battery is ideal. With these highly customizable bikes the possibilities are truly endless.
Three wheelers // Recubents etc.
Almost any style of bike can be converted into an eBike. The three wheeler is a good choice for a laid back grocery getter and a recumbent can make a cross country speed demon. With any bike like these it is best to contact us so we can research the model to determine the best compatible equipment. Road bikes, while not very common, can be converted as well. If you can dream it we can build it!
